A lot of people believe that mold can only grow in a humid environment, but that’s not the case. Whether it is a cold, damp winter or a warm, humid summer, activities at home can result in moisture indoors and the appearance of mold.

In fact, it can grow on walls, clothes, books, toys, and even CDs, turning valuables into musty relics that only look fit for the garbage. Molds are a form of fungus. There are many different types, and they can occur both indoors and outdoors.

Molds can be very harmful to our health and our household items, so they must be prevented and/or gotten rid of.

Harmful molds can be classified into allergenic molds that cause and produce allergies and allergic reactions such as asthma attacks, pathogenic molds that cause health problems in those suffering from an acute illness, and toxigenic molds that produce toxic substances that can lead to dangerous or even deadly health conditions. This is sometimes referred to as “toxic mold.”

Around the home, we can be faced with 12 types of molds that include Acremonium, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Mucor, Penicillin, Stachybotrys, Trichoderma, and Ulocladium.  There are several ways by which molds can be gotten rid of, but nature provides one of the most effective ways in essential oils.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants that are obtained through distillation - via steam and/or water - or mechanical methods, such as cold pressing. Basically, Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavor, or "essence," of their source.

It is imperative to know that the process of obtaining essential oils is very important. In other words, essential oils obtained through chemical processes are not original essential oils.

The benefits of essential oils cannot be overestimated. They help relieve stress, anxiety, headaches, migraine, insomnia, and other health issues. Essential oils are also used in aromatherapy, as mosquito repellents, and for industrial cosmetics.

The household uses of essential oils include cleaning wipes, toilet cleaner, hand sanitizer, car freshener, fabric spray, hand soap, home filter, carpet freshener, floor cleaner, and laundry detergent. This article is concerned with the effectiveness of essential oils in killing molds in the household.

Molds produce spores that spread by floating in the air. These mold spores can be found in all indoor environments. There is no way to prevent spores, and they can persist in conditions where mold itself cannot grow.

Mold spores would thrive better in environments that are moist and warm, so when they land on a damp spot, they begin to grow. Molds can grow on a variety of different surfaces, including fabric, paper, wood, glass, and plastic. As they grow, they begin to digest the material they are growing on.

Apart from these negative effects mold can have on our household items, mold can also have a negative effect on our health. When mold goes untreated, it will continue to spread, and may even grow into black mold, which can cause detrimental health issues.

When mold spores disperse throughout the home, they may cause symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing, stuffy nose, itchy eyes, runny eyes, and rash. Excessive mold infestation may even cause toxic mold poisoning.
