Essential oils have been touted as being beneficial for treating everything from toothache to autism. But can essential oils really help with autism? It is important to explore this topic since prevalence of autism in American children has increased by 119.4% from 2000 to 2010. This According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) makes it the fastest-growing developmental disability. Of the 1 in 68 children with autism, the conditions vary greatly with each child. Hence, there is a huge demand for ways to mitigate the effects of autism. Could there be a simple solution?
Recently, WTSP’s 10News profiled a mother who claims essential oils positively changed her 2-year old daughter‘s life. Although, it is difficult to tell at first glance, Yadira Calderon says her daughter is currently in full-blown regression and has difficulty speaking among other symptoms. Yadira first explored the using essential oils for treating autism following the devastating diagnosis of her daughter in June 2011.
So how does Yadira use the essential oils to help her daughter with autism? She applies lemongrass and frankincense behind her daughter’s neck, along her spinal cord, and on the sole of her feet every day. Whenever her daughter also has ear pain, she uses frankincense and lavender. Within 15 minutes the pain and screaming stops.
By no means are essential oils a remedy for autism. However, they are certainly an effective problem solver and may be an important tool in providing relief for children with autism and their parents as well.
